Q:
Splitting string into multple strings of specified length with python
I have a set of strings which I would like to break up into arrays of specified length. For example, I want to extract words of length 4 from a string. It should work as follows:
word = “word”
split(word, 4)
> [“word”, “rd”, “rd”, “ld”, “ld”]
I’ve tried using split with an argument of 4 but this gives me an error:
split(word, 4)
TypeError: sequence item 0: expected str instance, list found
I’ve also tried using a list comprehension which works but doesn’t give me back the correct sequence.
[word[i:i+4] for i in range(0,len(word),4)]
> [“ww”, “rd”, “rd”, “ld”, “ld”]
I’d be really grateful if you could show me how I could do this.

This line:
word = “word”
defines a word variable.
word = “word”
is a no-op.
Assignments don’t return anything, so you’re basically making a local word variable that doesn’t have anything to do with your main, global word variable.
Also, you shouldn’t use the name word. Python is an object oriented language, so you shouldn’t name a variable the same as a builtin.
Instead, just use the word variable in your function.

This is because you’re assigning word to a local variable word and not the global word in your function.
What you want is something like:
def split(word, length):
word = word.split(” “)
return word[:length]
This will return a list of length elements from the word, starting at the second position, including the first.
