With the appropriate knowledge, Photoshop can make a compelling photograph that may be stunning in its own right but that does require some creativity, skill, and dedication. However, in Photoshop, you can manipulate only the raster image. There’s nothing you can do to the underlying toner with Photoshop alone.
There are other image-editing programs that can create their own layers and manipulate those layers as well; however, Photoshop is the de facto standard for that type of feature. (I personally prefer Photoshop Elements, which offers the same set of features as Photoshop, but at a much lower cost.)
The layered editing approach of Photoshop — with several different tools that operate on individual layers — works well for image manipulation because you can manipulate what’s underneath. It makes image processing much more flexible than an image editor that works with flat, unflattened digital images.
If you’re planning on doing the more advanced work that Photoshop does, you can still start with Photoshop Elements, which focuses on the basics of image editing and manipulation. With it, you can do everything from basic color corrections to more advanced image-modification work.
In this chapter, I show you how to create multiple layers in Photoshop. I then explain how to manipulate layers and paint images. Finally, I show you how to create depth in your images so that the focus is on the subject matter.
Creating Layers in Photoshop
Layers represent different aspects of an image. For example, you have the background that a photograph is taken on; you have a subject that the photographer chooses to concentrate on; and you have any objects that the photographer wants to highlight.
You use layers to create all these different layers and then manipulate them on the computer. Although each layer can contain multiple colors, shapes, and text objects, the process of editing a layer is identical whether it contains one thing or several. If you want to edit the entire background layer, you don’t need to edit each individual item. If you want to edit a subject layer, for example, you’d need to edit the subject itself.
You can find out more about what layers are and the difference between them on the “Using Layers” sidebar, later in this chapter.
Here’s what you need to do to create layers:
1. Open an image in Photoshop.
2. Choose Edit⇒Layers.

NASA plans to send its next mission into deep space on Saturday, when a pair of unmanned probes will launch on an Atlas rocket.
The launch window for this mission is 6:37 a.m. EST (2137 GMT), when the two spacecraft will become the first to travel outside the planet’s gravitational pull since 2009. Their purpose: to pick up a bit of dust in the dark cosmic cloud called the Orion Nebula that will help scientists better understand the universe’s formation.
The mission will launch a NASA deep-space observatory called the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) and a Russian-built planetary science mission called the Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx), according to a statement released by NASA.

What are the implications of the Rule on physical borders?
The concept of jurisdiction, in the context of multilateral trade negotiations, relates to the scope of a state’s trade authority. The evolution of existing regional trade agreements has extended this concept, adding to its legal repertoire the concept of some physical borders between countries, which may hinder trade. Immature dendritic cells (DC) migrate toward chemokines, including the ligand stem cell factor (SCF), in response to inflammatory chemokines. DC can produce SCF in response to inflammatory cytokines. We compared the ability of SCF and the chemokine monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP) to attract DCs in response to stimulation with the microbial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and the antifungal drug N-methyl-N’-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). DCs were harvested from the spleens of mice treated with N-acetylcysteine and then either pulsed with LPS or exposed to MNNG. Phenotypic analyses revealed that DCs were of dendritic morphology following both treatments. The SCF receptor, c-kit, and the SCF receptor, CD117/c-kit, were expressed on surface DC. Addition of LPS-pulsed DCs to wells containing SCF increased migration of DCs approximately 10-fold over chemotaxis in response to SCF alone. The beta chain of LPS was required for this stimulation.
