Is Photoshop Free?

The original Photoshop was launched in 1991. As of December 2010, it has been downloaded over 200 million times! At the time of this writing, the latest version is Photoshop CS6.

Originally, you had to pay a one-time licensing fee for the software. However, in July 2010, Adobe began the free Photoshop and Creative Cloud for all personal use. It is still not free to use if you want to make money with your images.

Installing Photoshop

You can install Photoshop and a number of plug-ins on just about any operating system. In fact, the program runs on over 100 different platforms.

There are several ways to install Photoshop on your computer. Most computers will come with Photoshop. Many laptops do not come with Photoshop. Your computer may be able to install the software by itself or it might need additional software to help.

Installing Photoshop via Your System’s Manufacturer

If your computer is pre-installed with Photoshop (or another software application) and is not from Adobe, you may need to use Photoshop’s own installation instructions to install the software onto your computer.

There are a number of ways to do this. The most common methods involve your computer’s built-in program manager, or manufacturer’s standard software packages. For example, there is a link on the bottom of the “Help” page for this program below.

Most operating systems (Windows, Mac, and Linux) also come with a program manager to install software for you. If the program manager is not used, you can find the directions for installing the Photoshop software in your computer’s manual.

Using the Free Download Version of Photoshop

You can download the software version of Photoshop directly from Adobe’s website. You need the latest version of the program and you’ll need to download the software directly from the Adobe website.

As you can see below, you can download the latest version of the software directly from Adobe’s website. You need to check the version requirements to make sure you have the necessary version of the software.

Note: You do not need to install the software through the Adobe website. You can also download the Photoshop and other Creative Suite packages directly from other sites.

But new users often don’t know where to start with Photoshop Elements. They want to use its powerful tools, but can’t see how to get started.

In this guide, we have narrowed the focus on using the program’s first-rate tools for design: Edit, Image, Adjustments, and Adjustment Layers, to produce original and creative content, such as black and white pictures, animated GIFs, and anime avatars.

Edit a photo with Photoshop Elements

Everything starts with an image file that needs editing. The next sections will help you get started on that. Once you have completed the task of editing an image, check out the sections on using Photoshop Elements to design a new image from scratch.

Getting Started with Photoshop Elements

By default, when you open Photoshop Elements, you are presented with an empty canvas. It’s time to create your first image with this program. You can use one of these methods:

With a photo, select Start, and Photoshop Elements opens a new window that enables you to crop the photo’s dimensions. You can crop the photo so that it’s bigger than the default dimensions in the window, creating a new image.

The new canvas is larger than your photo. It is filled with the photo’s background. To separate your photo from the background, hold down the Ctrl key, click the Canvas Tools on the top toolbar, and then click either the Marquee or Lasso tools. With your mouse pointer over your photo, click and drag a border around your image.

When you are done, click OK to return to your original image. You now have a new empty canvas that is the same size as your photo.

Using the tools

Let’s use the tools that are built into Photoshop Elements to create a black and white version of the image below.

To make it easier to understand, you can split the process of editing into three sections:

1. Tools for enhancing the photo

1.1. Selective Color

Your Photoshop workspace will appear (see Figure 2-1, top). You can modify the title and folder here. You don’t really need to change either. Just leave the defaults.

## Step 2: Laying the Groundwork

Before you start learning to use some of Photoshop’s tools, it’s a good idea to work on some composition fundamentals. If you have never worked with Photoshop before, these basic tasks will prepare you to handle the bulk of your graphics work. Don’t worry, they’re relatively easy:
