The only reason I use Photoshop is to create illustrated books that could otherwise be done with either InDesign or Illustrator.
To use Photoshop, you must have a copy of Photoshop on your hard drive, and it must be installed, which entails running its setup program. Here’s how to install Photoshop:
1. Download Photoshop from `www.adobe.com/photoshop`.
2. Run the program’s installer.
3. Follow the instructions that appear on your computer screen.
After you’ve installed Photoshop, it needs to be updated. Go to the program’s application menu and select Photoshop | Preferences, or click the Preferences button in the Photoshop toolbar (see Figure 3-3). From the Photoshop Preferences window, click the Updates tab. When the window opens, click the Update Now button to have Photoshop check your computer for current versions of Photoshop.
If you’re running a 32-bit version of Photoshop, click the Show Updates For Only 64-bit Versions button to have your computer check whether a 64-bit version of Photoshop is available. Click OK to the message that appears and return to the Preferences window to continue.
You can install Photoshop for Windows on a portable device such as a USB hard drive or wireless flash drive. However, the portable version only works as long as the device is connected to the computer that you installed it on. If you need a portable Photoshop version that you can use at home or on the road, purchase a CS4 Photoshop Elements Pack, which includes portable editions of both Photoshop and Elements (`www.adobe.com/photoshop/elements/index.html`).
**Figure 3-3:** Visit the Photoshop Preferences window to check for updates and see how often they come out.
Photoshop CS4 includes a full version of Photoshop, which includes the full suite of tools for editing. You can continue to use the portable Photoshop version for non-editing tasks, such as creating documents for print, as well as working with non-destructive editing and layer and mask features.
Setting Up a New Photoshop Project
After you install Photoshop, you need to open it to create your own files for print. The first time that you open a file in Photoshop, you don’t have any of the original images in the file. For the first few months that you use Photoshop, you may not have any images. To get started, close the Preferences window in the Photoshop menu and reopen the program.

The recent wave of its updates to the overall program, along with the brand-new Photoshop Brushes, have had many Photoshop fans both excited and confused. With these changes, Adobe’s seemingly obvious investment in the company’s first products on tablets is clear: to bring the functionality of Photoshop to an entirely new platform.
Adding an application to the iPad is an unprecedented move for a software company, and one that many have been looking for. Photoshop — once the de facto standard for professional image editing on desktops — is now only available in a Windows environment, and the designers of Adobe’s other tablet image editing application Photo Story have already hinted at making an iPad version.
But what does this all mean? We’ll take a look at the new features of the update in this breakdown, and look at Photoshop’s rocky history on the tablet computer.
The biggest change to the new version is the addition of Photoshop Brushes, which are a physical modification of the design’s selection and blending tools. Brushes have been a very long time coming for Photoshop. Photo Brushes, as Adobe calls them, replace the default Photoshop tools, and are designed to work in much the same way.
These brushes come in a variety of places, but especially in Adobe Revel and the upcoming free Photoshop Touch mobile app. They can be acquired either from your tablet’s built-in store or from a standalone app available for download from the iTunes or Google Play store. We’ll go into a little more detail on the app after the break, but first, let’s see what the new brushes themselves do.
Brushes use a virtual paintbrush to layer color over an image. They affect the entire selection area, or otherwise the portion that is touched. If you stroke a brush over an area and then let go, the changes will automatically be applied to the selection area. The brush will only be available from the toolbar if you’ve allowed the brushes in Photoshop to be painted on.
In a traditional Photoshop selection process, you would use a selection tool to pick out a selection area on an image, then paint to the selection. The selection area will only show up on the selection until you paint over it. You can do things like adjust the size, the shape, the density of the brush, the opacity, and other variables
Hypoxia-induced changes in the expression of a panel of four hypoxia-regulated genes: HIF-1alpha, VEGF, VEGF receptor and platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor.
Tissue hypoxia is a signal involved in a variety of physiologic processes, including angiogenesis and erythropoiesis. A class of proteins encoded by hypoxia-inducible genes was identified after the discovery that the transcription factor Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (HIF) is activated by the hypoxia-dependent degradation of its inhibitor, the von Hippel-Lindau protein. This class of genes encode for such proteins as Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), an important mediator of angiogenesis, Platelet-derived Endothelial Cell Growth Factor (PD-ECGF), a cytokine with angiogenic and mitogenic activities, and VEGF Receptor 2, a receptor for VEGF. Four HIF-1alpha-regulated genes (CA9, VEGF, VEGF receptor-2 and PD-ECGF) are induced by hypoxia and represent convenient biomarkers of the hypoxic microenvironment. In this work we analyzed the effects of different hypoxia exposure times on the expression of these four genes. Two cell lines were used: hepatocarcinoma cells (Hep G2), which express VEGF and PD-ECGF, and endothelial cells (HUVEC), which do not. We show that the expression of all the genes is enhanced by hypoxia in both cell lines. This hypoxia-dependent response is first detected at 6 hours of hypoxia, and is more evident at 72 hours. This is the first study to show that PD-ECGF and VEGF receptor-2 are induced by hypoxia. These results provide a deeper insight into the response of an important family of genes to hypoxia.I had to laugh at the headline of this article “The Holy Grail Of Apple’s Watch”. Despite all the criticism, I still think Apple’s Watch is going to be the next large success for Apple. Look at Android Wear (by Google) sales and Apple is already way ahead of them, sales are doubling every two quarters. In the last quarter, Apple’s Watch sales were 70 million with 5 million units being sold on the first day.
The Apple Watch is revolutionary because it has all

Today is the day! At 12:01am, March 1st, I will step onto the curb of Baldwin Ave, in St. Louis Missouri. I will have just come from the Post Office because I am mailing my first (and only) package to my parents. I have thought about this day, my future as an independent art collector, with excitement for the future, for the future of my art, for my future beyond academia. I will have finally “choose[n] a specialty” and have never felt as excited about anything before.
I am currently a senior at Washington University in St. Louis majoring in Art History. I am a diligent student, hard worker, and a student of the fine arts. I have spent the majority of my time in college working diligently in my art classes and on my studio art projects. I have had the good fortune of having many faculty members who truly believe in me as an artist. Some of them I have gotten to know fairly well as I have returned to campus to participate in the numerous art opportunities offered on the campus. My principal professor and advisor and his wife have formed a formidable, very helpful friendship with me that I will cherish for the rest of my life. They have provided me with opportunities to exhibit my work in their classes, along with assistance in the development and production of my art. I am very lucky.
Yes, I realize that art galleries and public institutions only open when it is “fashionable” for art galleries to open. I realize that I probably have less than a year to “market” my art, in order to be an “insider”, before my art becomes “fashionable”. But I am excited! I am excited to have chosen, in a way, my “final major”. I’m excited to have “settled on a specialty”, but I am also excited about my art, my artistic pursuits.
Many of my friends from art classes have mentored me in developing my own art, helped me to hone my skill by developing my own personal art style, and provided me with opportunities for opportunities, including showing in national and international shows. What I have personally experienced and learned from them has given me great confidence, joy and enthusiasm for art.
I have spent years reading books on art and aesthetic theory, and I have also learned, by trial and error, that “art” is a subjective “thing”. No two art pieces ever look or feel exactly the same
