Weathering of building materials, such as concrete, brick, ceramic and asphalt, creates a problem in the implementation of buildings in many regions of the world. Therefore, it is important to understand weathering mechanisms of building materials and to find solutions to the problem. In this study, we have investigated the effect of solar and artificial light on the chemical, physical and optical properties of cement, concrete and mortar. Moreover, the effect of non-thermal plasma treatment on the mechanical properties of concrete was investigated. The microstructure of concrete and mortar was analyzed using SEM and EDS to observe the surface condition of samples. The hardness of concrete and mortar specimens was tested using Vickers Hardness tester. The effect of sunlight on the density of concrete was studied using ARL-445 optometer. Changes in the chemical composition of concrete due to the weathering agents were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The energy of each photon was determined by using X-ray-to-photon conversion coefficient. The energy of each photon is referred to as photon energy. The cumulative number of photons in the tested range of photon energy was calculated. The effect of weathering on the surface roughness of concrete and mortar was evaluated using Alicona Infinite Focus-surface profiler. The results showed that weathering of cement, concrete and mortar changes their microstructure and properties.
