In the letter addressed to K. Palaniswami, Haasan, who had himself worn the saffron robes before and during his controversial political protest in Chennai in 2004, urged the government to consider renaming the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to the Veer Savarkar University as there was “no harm in doing so”.

“The ideology of Veer Savarkar is one that we must learn from. India can have no greater ideal than that of free and independent India. From this outlook the other aspects of our life such as family, health and education also become important. India is still not in a position to give us our wish of an independent and self-reliant country where the people are given the confidence to speak in one language. Veer Savarkar’s philosophy is a philosophy of hope,” he wrote.

“It is due to Veer Savarkar’s vision that we are in the position of fighting our independence to become free. We have to consider ourselves fortunate that the Indian tricolour came into existence on 15 August 1947 because it was followed by the great life of Veer Savarkar. India’s sovereignty can never be complete without it,” he said.

There had been references in Savarkar’s published articles that “our national flag is not yet flying high”.
